Smart Risk Taking - Exploring Career Paths in Translational Medicine: Academia and Beyond
Friday July 10, 2026 09:00 - 10:00 CEST
It is important to explore various career paths in translational medicine to understand the broad spectrum of opportunities available. Together, we will chart the pros and cons of different career options, including academia, industry (biotech and pharma), entrepreneurship (start-up culture), government policy/administration, clinical care, and non-profit sectors. We will discuss the personal attributes essential for success in these fields, the skills required, and how to determine the best path for you. We will also reflect on personal career aspirations and how to balance professional goals with life goals. This session is designed to get participants thinking about their career paths and how they fit into their overall lives.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Explore the different career opportunities available in translational medicine, including academia, industry, entrepreneurship, government policy, clinical care, and non-profit sectors.
  2. Identify the personal attributes and skills important for success in various career paths within translational medicine.
  3. Reflect on personal career aspirations and how to balance professional goals with life goals.

Trust in Science
Friday July 10, 2026 10:15 - 11:15 CEST
Session description:
What happens when you, as a scientist, enter the public arena to communicate the science you stand for—and are met not only with appreciation, but also with skepticism, resistance, or even denial?

In this interview session, Marc Bonten will share his personal experiences from his public roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, you will explore how to navigate medical misinformation in public debates and (social) media, and reflect on the responsibilities and challenges of being a visible scientific voice in society.
Learning objectives:
  • Critically reflect on the role of scientists in public debates and the ethical challenges involved in communicating science to diverse audiences.
  • Identify strategies for effectively responding to medical misinformation in (social) media and public discourse.
  • Develop personal insights into how trust in science is built, challenged, and maintained in times of societal crisis.
